Water Timer Setup & Troubleshooting: Pairing, Schedules and No-Flow Checks

This page is for the moment after the box is open: the timer is on the tap, the app is installed, and something is not doing what you expected. Most of what follows applies to any tap-mounted garden water timer — mechanical, digital, direct Wi-Fi, or an indoor gateway paired to an outdoor radio unit. Sections marked Johgee 4-zone give the exact values for the timer we sell, taken from its printed quick guide.

Which kind of timer do you have?

The fix depends far more on the type than on the brand. Identify yours before reading on.

Three checks before anything else

  1. Fresh alkaline batteries, correct way round. Rechargeable cells frequently sit below the voltage a solenoid valve needs to move, even while the app still shows a battery icon. Zinc-carbon cells fail early outdoors.
  2. The tap is fully open. A tap timer contains no pump. It can only pass on pressure the tap already has.
  3. The inlet filter is clean. Grit is the most common single cause of a valve that will not open, will not close fully, or weeps after shut-off.

A large share of what gets returned as faulty is one of these three.

The water timer will not turn on, or the lights are dead

  • Take both batteries out, check the contacts for corrosion or green residue, and refit them. Cold and damp leave a film that blocks contact.
  • Try a fresh, unopened pack rather than cells taken from a drawer. Two cells from different ages behave badly together.
  • Check the battery compartment seal and lid. Water in the compartment is a warranty matter, not a settings problem.
  • If the unit spent the winter outdoors with batteries in, expect damage. See the frost section below.

The timer says it is on, but no water comes out

Work down this list in order and stop at the first thing that changes the result.

  1. Open the tap fully and confirm the bare tap flows normally into a bucket.
  2. Check inlet pressure. Most tap timers need a working minimum to shift the valve at all. Water butts and gravity feeds usually do not supply enough on their own; they need a pump.
  3. Clean the inlet filter. Unscrew the timer from the tap, remove the mesh, rinse it, refit it the right way round.
  4. Test one outlet only. Disconnect the hoses from the others. If a single zone now flows, the problem is total demand, not the valve.
  5. Check the far end of the line. A kinked hose, a closed inline tap, or blocked drip emitters will hold back everything upstream.
  6. Run the zone by hand at the unit. If the manual control opens the valve but the app does not, the fault is in the schedule or the radio link, not the plumbing.

The last step is the important one: it separates a water fault from a control fault, and they have nothing to do with each other.

The water timer will not pair with the app

Nearly every failed pairing is one of five things.

  • The phone is on a 5 GHz network. These devices join 2.4 GHz only. If your router publishes one combined name for both bands, temporarily separate them, or use a guest 2.4 GHz network for the setup.
  • Bluetooth is off on the phone. Many gateways are discovered over Bluetooth first, then handed to Wi-Fi. Turn it on before you start.
  • The Wi-Fi password is wrong. The app reports this as a timeout, not as a wrong password, which sends people looking for a hardware fault.
  • The device is not actually in pairing mode. A steady light is usually not pairing mode. Check what flashing means on your unit before you assume it is broken.
  • The order was wrong on a gateway system. The gateway must be on the network before the outdoor unit can be added to it.

The gateway will not connect to Wi-Fi

  • Plug it into a socket close to the router for the initial setup, then move it later and re-test.
  • Do not put it behind a fridge, a washing machine, a metal cabinet or a mirror.
  • Reset it and start again rather than retrying a half-finished pairing; a partial pairing tends to keep failing in the same place.
  • Confirm the router is not set to reject new devices, and that MAC filtering is off.

The timer keeps dropping out at the end of the garden

This is a range problem, and it is why gateway-and-radio systems exist. Household Wi-Fi is rarely usable forty metres down a garden, through a wall, behind a shed. A sub-GHz radio link from an indoor gateway travels much further and passes through masonry far better than 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi does.

If you have a direct Wi-Fi timer and it will not hold a connection at the tap, no amount of app troubleshooting will fix it. Either move a mesh node or access point towards that side of the house, or change to a gateway-based system.

If you already have a gateway and it still drops out, move the gateway itself — towards the garden-facing wall, off the floor, out of a metal-lined cupboard — and re-test before touching anything outdoors.

One zone will not close, or water keeps running

Treat this as urgent; it is the failure that produces a water bill.

  1. Close the tap by hand first. Do this before diagnosing anything.
  2. Remove the timer and clean the inlet filter. Grit lodged on a valve seat is the usual cause of a valve that will not seat.
  3. Check the outlet seal and washer for damage or a trapped fragment.
  4. Check for two overlapping schedules on the same zone, plus a manual run left on. On multi-zone units this looks exactly like a stuck valve.
  5. If a cleaned valve still will not close on a unit with good batteries, it is a hardware fault. Stop testing and claim under warranty.

The schedule did not run at the set time

  • Set the current time first. On non-connected timers this is the number one cause. A start time is meaningless until the unit knows what time it is now.
  • Check AM/PM and the day-of-week pattern. An every-second-day cycle counts from the day you saved it, not from today.
  • Check whether a rain delay or weather rule is active. If the app has paused watering because of forecast rain, the schedule is working correctly and doing nothing.
  • Check zone overlap. If several zones are set to start together and pressure will not carry them, the later ones deliver very little. Stagger the start times instead.
  • Manual watering does not cancel the schedule. Watering by hand at the unit does not count as that day's run; the automatic cycle will still happen.

Skipping watering after rain, without deleting the schedule

Use the rain delay or holiday pause rather than clearing the programme. Deleting a schedule to skip one wet week is how people arrive back from holiday to a dead greenhouse. A delay expires by itself and hands control back to the saved programme.

If your unit has a weather-linked delay, check that the location set in the app is your garden and not the city where you first opened the app.

New batteries fitted, and the timer still is not working

This is the classic spring complaint, and it usually is not the batteries.

  • Water left in the valve body over winter expands as it freezes and can split the housing or deform a seat. The unit may power up, respond in the app, and still not pass water.
  • Corroded battery contacts give an intermittent connection: the display lights, but the valve has nothing left to move on.
  • Grit and biofilm settle in the filter over months of standing water. Clean it before concluding anything.
  • A unit that was stored correctly, indoors and drained, and still fails on fresh alkaline cells, is a warranty case.

Frost: taking the timer off, and putting it back in spring

Before the first frost:

  1. Close the tap and release pressure by running a zone briefly.
  2. Unscrew the timer from the tap and drain the water out of the valve body.
  3. Take the batteries out — leaving them in over winter is what causes leaked-cell damage.
  4. Store the unit indoors, dry. Store the indoor gateway plugged in or unplugged, as you prefer; it is not the part at risk.
  5. Drain and coil the hoses and drip lines too.

In spring, refit with fresh alkaline cells, clean the filter, run each zone by hand before you trust any schedule, and check for weeping at the inlet with a dry tissue. Our frost removal guide and full winterising checklist cover the wider system.

The tap connection leaks

  • Confirm the thread size. UK outdoor taps are commonly 3/4" BSP, but 1/2" taps and square-profile older taps both exist and need the right adaptor.
  • Check the rubber washer is present, flat, and not doubled up. Two washers seal worse than one.
  • Start the collar square and by hand. If it binds in the first turn, stop and inspect rather than forcing it.
  • Do not use the tap as a bracket for the weight of four hoses. Support the timer and the hoses separately.

Johgee 4-zone RF timer: quick start

These steps are from the printed quick guide supplied with the Johgee Smart 4-Zone RF Water Timer. The system has two parts that pair separately and in this order: an indoor Sub-GHz gateway, then the outdoor RF timer.

You will need: two 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries, a 2.4 GHz router, and a smartphone with Bluetooth on.

  1. Install the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app (either works) and create an account.
  2. Have your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi password to hand, and connect the phone to that 2.4 GHz network.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
  4. Plug the gateway into a socket near the router — 1 to 6 m, and the closer the better.
  5. Pair the gateway in the app. It is in pairing mode when the RF light is blue and the Wi-Fi light is flashing orange slowly.
  6. Fit the two AA alkaline batteries into the outdoor timer. All four zone lights turn white and flash quickly, which means it is waiting to be added.
  7. Open the Sub-GHz Gateway screen in the app. The timer is normally added by itself within a few seconds.
  8. When paired, the timer appears both on the app home screen and on the gateway screen.

If the gateway pairing times out or fails: hold the gateway button for 5 seconds until the Wi-Fi light blinks slowly again, and re-check the Wi-Fi password — a wrong password is reported as a timeout.

If the timer is not picked up: confirm the gateway's RF light is flashing blue slowly; if it is not, press the gateway button for 1 second. Then confirm the timer's four lights are flashing white quickly; if they are not, hold any zone button for 5 seconds.

The gateway's Wi-Fi light is the one that catches people out: orange off means connected.

Gateway button: short press of 1 second starts or stops adding an RF device; press and hold for 5 seconds to reset both the Wi-Fi and the RF pairing. Zone buttons on the outdoor unit act as the manual and reset controls for each zone.

Three points from the manual that prevent most support tickets: the timer generates no pressure of its own and needs a pressurised supply; the inlet filter must be kept in place and cleaned regularly, because impurities cause both valve failure and leaks; and below 3 °C, or before any long period of disuse, take the unit off, remove the batteries, empty the water from the valve tubes and store it indoors.

The app refreshes on demand rather than continuously — pull down to refresh when you open it, or a stale screen will look like an offline device.

When it is a fault, not a setting

Stop troubleshooting and get in touch if, on fresh alkaline batteries and a clean filter, any of these is true: a valve will not close; water enters the battery compartment; the housing is cracked; or a zone that ran correctly now fails while the other three work.
