Install a 4-Zone Water Timer: UK Commissioning Guide

What counts as installed
A four-zone timer is not commissioned when the app says “connected”. It is commissioned when every intended line receives adequate water, the furthest outlet has been checked, every valve closes, schedules survive a normal day of use and the household can isolate the supply without a phone.
This guide begins after the controller has passed the four-outlet pre-purchase test. Follow the exact manual supplied with the device where its component order or pairing sequence differs.
This is a reader commissioning procedure designed from current specifications and observable pass/fail checks. It is not a report that the editorial team completed or witnessed this installation. Use the steps and seven-day grid as your own worksheet and record the actual result.
Prepare a rollback before touching the tap
Photograph the working bare tap and any existing adaptor. Fill a watering can for immediate plant needs. Confirm the internal or external isolating valve works, and keep the previous hose connector available.
Record:
- tap thread and sealing method;
- measured bare-tap flow and any manufacturer pressure/regulator rating used for the design;
- proposed gateway and controller positions;
- one line for each named plant group;
- delivery-hardware pressure and filtration requirements.
If installation fails, close the supply, remove the new equipment and restore the photographed starting arrangement. That is a rollback, not a defeat.
Lay out and inspect every part
Compare the contents with the current manual. Check collars, washers, battery seals, outlet caps and visible transport damage. Do not infer the box contents from an older review.
Also prepare:
- correct batteries if required;
- clean bucket and stopwatch;
- spare compatible washers;
- line labels and waterproof pen;
- filter and pressure regulator required by the delivery system;
- hose supports or wall clips;
- catch containers for output comparison;
- dry tissue for leak checks.
Keep the controller outlets closed until the line layout is ready.
Step 1: establish the indoor gateway path
If the system uses an indoor gateway, connect it according to the current instructions. A Johgee gateway uses a 2.4 GHz home-network connection; that does not mean the outdoor controller itself joins household Wi-Fi.
Place the gateway at the proposed permanent location, not beside the router for a convenient first pairing. Confirm the phone can control the gateway after doors are closed and normal household equipment is operating.
Do not bury it behind large metal appliances. Record one alternative location that still has mains power and home-network coverage.
Step 2: fit the controller without stressing the tap
Before connecting a mains-fed system, identify the drinking-water company with Water UK's supplier finder, then check the current restriction notice. A timer is not a general hosepipe-ban exemption; use the UK hosepipe-ban checker and open the supplier's own notice.
Treat effective-from times as commissioning failures, not calendar trivia. At this article's 17 August 2026 check, Water UK listed a Wessex Water restriction with legal effect from 00:01 on 18 August; it was scheduled rather than active on the checked date. A system tested on the 17th must not remain scheduled across that boundary without a new notice check. Severn Trent's live page said no ban at the same check, which also shows why a national assumption is unsafe.
If a Temporary Use Ban applies, stop here unless the exact notice permits the intended use. Thames Water's current exception 14 is one worked example: an approved fixed drip or trickle system must have a pressure-reducing valve and timer, must not be handheld, must place water drip by drip directly on or below the soil, and must create no runoff, jet or mist. Those are Thames conditions, not a UK-wide equipment approval. Another supplier may vary or omit them.
Record the supplier, notice URL, checked date and the clause relied upon. If no clear exception covers the delivery method, commission with a permitted non-mains source or postpone the water test. Do not treat the controller, app or timer as permission.
Close the tap. Remove the old connector and clean the sealing face. Select the adaptor and washer specified for the measured thread. Start the collar squarely by hand; if it binds within the first turn, stop and inspect rather than forcing it.
Orient the controller as instructed. Support the body and future hose weight so the tap is not used as a bracket. Leave battery doors, buttons and labels accessible.
Open the tap slowly while all controller valves remain closed. Wrap a dry tissue around the inlet joint. Any persistent wet mark must be corrected before connecting four lines.
Step 3: name and connect one zone at a time
Use names such as “patio pots”, “salad bed”, “greenhouse” and “fruit cage”, not outlet numbers. Label both ends of every line. If a proposed zone uses lawn, sprinkler, spray or another method restricted by the live supplier notice, omit that zone from commissioning rather than merely renaming it.
Connect only Zone A first. Fit its regulator and filter where required by their instructions. Flush new pipe before closing ends or fitting fine emitters. Then connect the intended delivery hardware.
Run Zone A manually. Check the first and final delivery point, visible joints and the root area. Correct kinks, blocked emitters or excessive demand before copying the process to Zones B–D.
Building one proven circuit at a time makes faults attributable. Connecting all four first creates four possible causes for every symptom.
Step 4: measure distribution
For drip or micro-irrigation, collect output from representative near, middle and far emitters for the same duration. For a sprinkler, distribute straight-sided catch containers across the intended area only when the current supplier notice permits that mains-water use. If the notice forbids the method, skip the sprinkler and catch-container test entirely. A test run, spray pattern or mist is not a Temporary Use Ban workaround.
The purpose is not to manufacture a laboratory score. It is to detect a materially weak end, blocked outlet or coverage gap before automation hides it.
If distribution is poor:
- confirm the filter is clean and correctly oriented;
- check for kinks and partially closed fittings;
- verify regulation and source pressure;
- reduce demand or shorten the circuit within component limits;
- repeat the measurement.
Do not compensate for weak delivery by extending the runtime of the whole zone; the well-supplied area will receive more while the fault remains.
Step 5: verify radio control at the real tap
With the gateway and controller in final positions, send several open and close commands to each zone. Repeat from normal household locations. Then use the controller's local manual controls.
An app acknowledgement is not enough. Stand at the tap and confirm the correct valve physically opens and closes. If the path is unreliable, move the gateway to the recorded alternative position and repeat before setting schedules.
Step 6: create conservative schedules
Start with observed root-zone need, not a copied internet timetable. Plant group, container volume, soil, weather and delivery rate determine the initial runtime.
Stagger zones when simultaneous demand would exceed measured source capacity. Leave a short gap if the hardware benefits from pressure recovery. Save each programme, then read it back from the controller or app to catch day, time and zone mistakes.
Keep beds, greenhouse and containers separate when their delivery methods or moisture response differ. A lawn zone may be kept separate only when the current supplier notice clearly permits the intended watering method; otherwise leave it disabled and out of commissioning. Step 7: watch a full automatic cycle
Observe at least one scheduled start and stop for every zone. Confirm:
- the intended valve opens;
- the final delivery point flows;
- paths remain dry and safe;
- water reaches the intended root area;
- the valve closes fully;
- no inlet or outlet joint weeps afterwards.
Use a dry tissue after shut-off. A slow leak that disappears into soil is still a failed acceptance test.

Check batteries through the manufacturer's actual indicator rather than inventing a replacement interval.

On day seven:
- repeat near/far output checks;
- exercise local open and close controls;
- simulate loss of remote access;
- confirm the household shut-off procedure;
- inspect supports and labels;
- adjust one schedule variable at a time.
Only then should the system be relied upon for a normal unattended run. Longer absence needs a separate fallback plan.

This walkthrough does not claim that an older box list, app screen or stored-schedule behaviour applies to every revision. Record the hardware and app version actually commissioned.
Handover and winter plan
Save photographs of the tap joint, gateway position, labelled lines, filter, regulators and flush points. Keep the measured output and starting schedules with the installation date. The handover record must name the controller hardware revision, app version, gateway version where shown, and the manual used; do not rely on a product-family name alone.
Before freezing weather, close the supply, remove and drain vulnerable tap-mounted equipment according to its instructions, open line ends and store the controller as directed. Installation is incomplete without a removal and recommissioning plan.
