Tomato Watering Schedule for UK Grow Bags and Pots

Quick schedule for tomatoes in grow bags
Check grow-bag and container tomatoes every morning. Water when the compost below the surface is beginning to dry, and expect at least daily watering in hot weather once plants are large and fruiting. In a hot greenhouse, a smaller second check or run later in the day may be necessary, but there is no safe universal runtime: emitter flow, bag size, plant size, compost and weather all change the result.
Use this as a starting decision table, then calibrate it with the method below.

The RHS advises keeping tomato compost moist and notes that large container plants may need watering at least once a day in hot weather. It also recommends consistent watering through flowering and fruiting; irregular moisture is associated with blossom-end rot.
How to set a timer without guessing minutes
1. Measure each emitter
Put an identical measuring container under an emitter in each representative position: nearest to the tap, middle of the line and far end. Run the zone for ten minutes and record millilitres collected.
Use this calculation:
hourly emitter output in litres = 10-minute collection in ml × 0.006
Example: 300 ml in ten minutes equals 1.8 litres per hour. This is an editorial calculation, not a recommendation that every tomato needs 1.8 litres.
2. Check distribution
The far-end emitter should not be dramatically weaker than the first. If it is, inspect the filter, pressure reducer, pipe length, blocked emitters and simultaneous zones before extending runtime. A longer run will overwater the first plants while hiding a distribution fault.
3. Run, wait and inspect the root zone
Water early, wait long enough for moisture to spread, then check several centimetres below the surface. The aim is evenly moist compost through the active root zone, with only brief drainage rather than continuous runoff.
4. Change one variable at a time
Adjust runtime, frequency or emitter count separately. Record the date, weather and result for several days. A timer becomes useful when it repeats a measured decision, not when it repeats a guess.
Grow bags, pots and raised beds behave differently
Grow bags
Grow bags have limited compost volume and several plants may share it. Check the driest end as well as the centre. Multiple small watering points are usually more even than one large emitter between plants. Make drainage slits as directed by the bag manufacturer and do not leave the bag permanently waterlogged.
Pots
Larger containers hold moisture longer than shallow pots, while terracotta and sun-exposed containers can dry faster. The RHS recommends at least a 30 cm pot for one tomato plant and notes that large plants may need frequent watering. Check each pot rather than copying the grow-bag runtime.
Greenhouse beds or raised beds
The deeper soil volume buffers moisture better than a bag, so watering may be less frequent but deeper. Check 5–10 cm below the surface. Keep foliage as dry as practical by delivering water at root level and ventilating the greenhouse.
A four-zone tomato and kitchen-garden layout
When one tap serves mixed planting, separate zones by water demand rather than by physical convenience:
- greenhouse tomatoes;
- outdoor grow bags and pots;
- raised-bed vegetables;
- herbs or established crops needing less frequent water.
Run zones sequentially unless measured flow proves the supply can support more. This prevents a lawn or long hose from reducing pressure at the tomato emitters.

Hot-weather adjustment without overwatering
Do not double runtime solely because the forecast is hotter. Use the plant and root zone:
- check the smallest or most exposed container first;
- shade dark pots where practical;
- mulch the surface while keeping mulch away from the stem;
- water early enough that a valve or blocked emitter can be noticed;
- split a genuinely larger requirement into two measured applications if one long run causes drainage;
- pause or reduce after cooler weather rather than leaving the heatwave schedule active.
Wilting at the hottest point of the day is not always proof that the compost is dry. Check below the surface before adding water. Persistent wilting with wet compost can indicate a root or disease problem rather than a scheduling problem.
Holiday test
Complete this test at least a week before travel:
- fit fresh appropriate batteries and clean the filter;
- run each zone manually while watching every connection;
- collect output at the first and last emitter;
- confirm the valve closes fully;
- observe the programmed run for several normal days;
- arrange a person who can inspect plants and shut off the tap if needed.
No app status can prove that water reached every plant. A detached tube can show as a successful run while the grow bag remains dry.

The exact duration is deliberately not copied from an unverified generic schedule; it must be calibrated from measured emitter output and actual compost condition.
