Automatic Watering System UK: Choose the Right Level

Start with the smallest useful automation
An automatic watering system can be as simple as a self-watering pot or as involved as buried pipework and controlled valves. The right level depends on the plants, water source, measured flow, number of schedules and who will maintain the system.
For a few pots, start with reservoirs, wicks or a simple timer. For one fixed bed, consider a filtered, pressure-regulated drip line. Add multiple controlled zones only when the garden contains plant groups that genuinely need different programmes.

Check legal use before choosing an automation level
If the system will use mains water, identify the drinking-water supplier and open its current restriction notice before choosing Level 2–5 hardware or any drip, soaker, spray or sprinkler delivery. Water UK's current overview shows that restrictions can cover different companies and regions at the same time. A timer is not permission, and a method allowed under one supplier's notice may not be allowed by another.
The timing can change overnight. At this article's 17 August 2026 check, Water UK listed restrictions for some or all customers of Affinity, Anglian, Cambridge, Essex & Suffolk, Southern, South East, South West, Dŵr Cymru and Thames. It listed Wessex Water restrictions with legal effect from 00:01 on 18 August; they were scheduled, not yet active, on the checked date. Severn Trent's live page said it had no hosepipe ban at the same check. These are dated examples, not permanent clearances: re-open the page for the property before each unattended run.
Where a Temporary Use Ban applies, stop the design unless the intended use is clearly permitted. Thames Water's current whole-supply-area ban has applied since 23 July 2026. Its exception 14 is one supplier-specific example: it requires an approved fixed drip or trickle system with a pressure-reducing valve and timer, not handheld, delivering drip by drip on or below the soil, and creating no runoff, jet or mist. Those conditions do not approve the same hardware elsewhere.
If the live notice does not clearly permit the intended mains-fed method, do not continue into Levels 2–5 hardware selection. Choose a Level 1 passive reservoir or wick where suitable, use a permitted non-mains source only after checking its hydraulic and hygiene limits, or hand-water priority plants with a watering can as the supplier allows. Return to mains automation only after the restriction or the exact permitted-use decision changes.
Re-open the live supplier notice before every unattended mains-water run while restrictions are possible; do not rely on the notice saved at installation. A soaker hose, sprinkler or spray circuit does not become a qualifying drip/trickle system because automation controls it. The detailed hosepipe-ban timer guide explains the check.
Five levels of automatic watering
Level 1: passive self-watering
Examples include reservoir pots, wicking systems and capillary matting. They require no tap valve or internet connection.
Best for a small number of compatible containers. Test with the exact compost and pot; passive does not mean maintenance free.
Level 2: one timed circuit
A single digital timer controls one drip line or soaker circuit. This is often enough for a greenhouse row or one raised-bed group. Under a Temporary Use Ban, a timed soaker is not automatically equivalent to an approved fixed drip/trickle system; stop unless the property's supplier notice clearly permits that method.
Best when all connected plants share a watering rhythm and the system can be inspected easily.
Level 3: two timed circuits
A dual-outlet timer separates two unlike jobs, such as greenhouse and patio pots.
Best when two schedules solve the layout without adding a gateway or large manifold.
Reject Level 3 if either circuit's delivery method is prohibited by the live supplier notice, if the two plant groups do not need different schedules, or if measured flow cannot support the planned operation.
Level 4: three or four smart zones
A multi-zone controller gives each outlet its own programme and may allow remote changes or rain delay.
Best when one tap serves several real groups and radio/app dependencies are acceptable.
Reject Level 4 if any intended zone remains a prohibited spray, sprinkler or lawn use, if the tap cannot supply the zones sequentially at measured flow, or if the household cannot recover the controller after a radio, app or account failure.
Level 5: permanent valve control
Buried mainline, valve boxes and a dedicated controller suit larger or more permanent landscapes.
Best when the scale and installation justify professional planning, backflow considerations, drainage and winter protection.
Reject Level 5 without a confirmed backflow, isolation, drainage and maintenance plan prepared for the actual property and current supplier requirements.
Decide from the plants backwards
List each plant group and answer:
- Is it in a pot, grow bag, raised bed or open soil?
- How quickly does its root zone dry?
- Does it need drip, micro, soaker or sprinkler delivery?
- Can it share a runtime with another group?
- What happens if one scheduled run is missed?
For the last question, write the recovery action now: hand-water priority containers or crops with a permitted method, isolate non-essential zones, inspect the controller and delivery line, then resume automation only after the cause and the current supplier rules have been checked. Do not compensate for a missed run by blindly doubling the next runtime.
Containers dry faster than open ground and should be checked individually. Established shrubs may need little routine watering. The RHS recommends choosing the right method and applying water to roots rather than following one rigid garden-wide calendar.
Confirm the water source
Mains tap
Measure flow and check pressure against every component. Confirm current water-company restrictions before using hose-fed automation.
Does an "approved drip or trickle irrigation watering system" make it allowed?
That phrase appears in Thames Water's current Temporary Use Ban notice; it is not a general approval label for every automatic watering kit. Thames describes a narrow exception for an approved fixed drip or trickle system fitted with both a pressure-reducing valve and a timer, not handheld, delivering water directly to or below the soil without runoff, jets or mist.
Treat this as a legal-use check separate from the hardware choice:
- identify the company that supplies drinking water to the property;
- open its live restriction page and legal notice;
- check every condition, not only whether the system has a timer;
- ask the supplier when the wording or the property's status is unclear;
- recheck on the day the system will run.
A sprinkler, spray hose or ordinary hose does not become an approved drip system because it is automated. Read the current UK hosepipe-ban checker and the timer-during-a-ban guide before using mains-fed automation during restrictions.
Water butt without a pump
Available pressure depends on water height above the outlet. Test at low level. Many electronic valves and long drip lines will not perform reliably under weak gravity pressure.
Pumped stored water
Match pump output and controls to the system. Fit appropriate filtration and protect the pump from running dry.
Mixed sources
Do not create an unsafe cross-connection. Follow supplier and plumbing requirements and seek competent advice where mains and stored-water systems could interact.
Measure tap flow
Time a known container at the bare tap:
litres per minute = container litres / seconds x 60
Then test the intended circuit. Long pipe, filters, regulators and timer valves reduce flow. Sequential zones are often more dependable than opening several outlets from one domestic tap at once.
Build one successful circuit first
- Lay the delivery line above ground.
- Fit regulation and filtration required by the components.
- Flush before installing or closing fine emitters.
- Run the nearest and furthest outlets into containers.
- Correct unequal output.
- Watch one scheduled start and close.
- Check the root zone the next day.
Only copy the design to another zone after the first one works. Scaling an untested fault creates four harder faults.
Choose the control method

Select the dependency the household can maintain. A feature is not useful if nobody can recover it after an account, battery or radio problem.
Add weather intelligence carefully
Rain delay, soil sensors and forecast automation can prevent unnecessary runs. They still need commissioning:
- compare sensor readings with the actual root area;
- check whether a sheltered greenhouse is represented by outdoor rainfall;
- confirm a paused schedule resumes correctly;
- retain a manual override;
- review programmes after seasonal change.
Automatic adjustment is a control input, not evidence that water reached the plants.
Plan failure and winter shutdown
Every system needs a way to close the water manually. Keep filters and valves accessible. Support hose weight, protect pipe from tools and record the location of buried components.
Before frost, isolate and drain vulnerable equipment according to its instructions. Remove tap-mounted timers where required and store them dry. Recommission in spring with fresh inspections rather than simply restoring the old schedule.
When Johgee is the right level
Johgee's four-zone RF timer occupies Level 4. Its current page publishes four independently scheduled outlets, an indoor Wi-Fi gateway and an RF link to the tap unit. It is relevant for pots, greenhouse, beds and another separately timed area from one tap.
It is not the beginner default. Use a single or dual controller if that solves the map. Check the Johgee specifications and outside tap timer checklist before choosing it.
