How often should greenhouse tomatoes be watered in hot weather?

Check greenhouse tomatoes every morning during hot weather and water when the root zone is beginning to dry, not simply because the calendar says “daily”. Grow bags and small pots may need a second check in late afternoon; plants in larger containers or open greenhouse borders may not.

Water at the compost or soil surface, keep foliage as dry as practical and aim for even moisture rather than alternating drought and saturation. The RHS advises regular watering to keep tomato growing media evenly moist because inconsistency can contribute to fruit splitting and blossom-end rot.

There is no safe universal answer such as “two litres every day”. Container volume, plant size, crop load, ventilation, shade, compost, emitter rate and the day's temperature all change demand.

Best time to water tomatoes in a greenhouse

Early morning is the best routine watering time. It lets you:

  • inspect plants before the greenhouse reaches its daytime peak;
  • replace moisture lost since the previous day;
  • correct a blocked dripper before heat builds;
  • keep leaves and paths drier overnight;
  • ventilate while plants are actively using water.

A late-afternoon check is useful during an exceptional hot spell, especially for grow bags, hanging containers and plants against the sunniest glazing. Water again only where the root zone is drying. Do not flood every plant as insurance.

If a plant wilts in the middle of a very hot day, check the compost before assuming it lacks water. Tomatoes can temporarily wilt when transpiration outruns root uptake even though the root zone is still moist. More water in already saturated compost reduces air around roots and does not solve overheating.

A root-zone check that takes one minute

Use several signals together:

  1. Push a finger or clean probe below the dry surface layer.
  2. Feel the weight of a representative pot or the tension in a grow bag.
  3. Check whether leaves recover as greenhouse temperature falls.
  4. Look for water running straight through channels at the container edge.
  5. Inspect the final dripper in the line, not only the first plant.

The surface can look dry while moisture remains below, and it can look dark immediately after a short run while the centre of the root ball stays dry. Check depth and distribution.

Starting routine by growing setup

These are observation routines, not prescribed volumes.

Record what happened for three or four hot days. A working schedule is evidence from that greenhouse, not a number copied from another garden.

Prevent the greenhouse becoming the real problem

Water demand rises sharply when a greenhouse traps heat. The RHS recommends adequate ventilation and shading during prolonged high temperature and dry conditions.

Before lengthening every watering run:

  • open roof vents, louvres and doors where safe;
  • use appropriate seasonal shading;
  • maintain air movement without directing a harsh draught at plants;
  • keep paths clear so inspection is easy;
  • avoid wetting foliage as a substitute for ventilation;
  • check that a closed vent or failed opener has not caused the sudden change.

Shading reduces heat load; it does not remove the need to inspect moisture. Ventilation can increase air movement and water use while preventing more dangerous heat accumulation. Treat temperature and irrigation as connected controls.

Keep moisture steady around flowering and fruiting

Inconsistent water availability is associated with common tomato problems. The aim is not constant saturation but a narrower swing between wet and dry.

Practical steps include:

  • use a container large enough for the mature plant;
  • water slowly enough for compost to absorb it;
  • direct water to the root area rather than leaves;
  • mulch open borders where appropriate;
  • support heavy trusses and remove damaged fruit;
  • change one schedule setting at a time;
  • keep feeding separate from emergency overwatering.

Blossom-end rot relates to calcium failing to reach developing fruit and is often triggered by irregular water supply, not simply by a lack of calcium in the compost. Stabilise watering before adding unneeded remedies.

Setting a drip timer for greenhouse tomatoes

A timer is useful only after emitter output and soil response are known.

  1. Place identical catch containers under the first, middle and last emitters.
  2. Run the zone for a known time.
  3. Compare volumes; correct blocked or mismatched emitters.
  4. Water the plants and inspect moisture after it has spread.
  5. Choose the shortest run that wets the intended root area without runoff.
  6. Observe several scheduled runs while somebody is present.
  7. Recheck after a major weather change or as fruit load increases.

Do not assume that a nominal two-litre-per-hour dripper always delivers exactly that amount. Pressure, elevation, filtration, line length and manufacturing tolerance affect output.

Use the detailed tomato timer schedule for grow-bag zoning and emitter checks. If the greenhouse shares one tap with pots, beds and a lawn, give it a separate programme rather than copying another zone's runtime.

Before leaving the greenhouse unattended

Run the complete plan for at least several days while somebody can intervene. During one scheduled run:

  • watch every connection open under pressure;
  • confirm the last plant receives water;
  • check the tap and filter for leaks;
  • confirm the valve closes fully;
  • make sure drainage cannot flood a floor or electrical equipment;
  • leave a simple written fallback for the person who can access the greenhouse.
